Silver Leaf

When we think of gilding in historic churches, we naturally think of gold leaf. Silver leaf decoration is found most often in churches of Marian worship (and other female saints). It’s considered the “feminine” choice and often paired with a lighter color palette for the decorative paint schemes. Before cleaning, some historic silver leaf decoration can easily be mistaken for gold due to “yellowing” over years of candle soot, unfiltered heating debris, and possibly the damaging use of varnish in previous interior maintenance efforts.
